GAME PROPER (Konomi Yuzuhara)

RULES AND REGULATIONS (Extended Play)
This will be multiple run-throughs of the To Heart 2 game, focusing on each girl except Konomi Yuzuhara. Because there would only be one post per scenario, stories will be extremely summarized. Furthermore, I'm playing this in a very quick fashion. Basically, I keep the game running while I'm doing some other stuff like surfing the net, since I only would listen to the dialogue of the voices in the game. This would result obviously in details that may be missed, moreso than when I played through Konomi's scenario.

Lacking Japanese will mean lack of story details. I expect that there will be a LOT of errors in the way I understood some events. Mainly, because I can't read Japanese text, all thoughts and dialogue of Takaki himself is unknown to me. I use the voice dialogue to somehow "guess" what the event or conversation is about. To the Japanese game players who may have found this page, please do help me in case I have mistaken in understanding some parts of the story. Please do post a comment or contact me.

INTRODUCTION
What are you trying to do here?
I will attempt the impossible by playing through a bishoujo game… in Japanese.

Are you suicidal?
This is just because of the extreme urge to somehow play a popular bishoujo game.

You won't understand it at all!
Yes I know. For one, To Heart 2 is a Visual Novel. It has TONS of text which I won't understand whe way I am now.

But because this is an attempt at futility, I have some tricks up my sleeve:
- I have a walkthrough.
- I have 5% knowledge of conversational Japanese.

Using the walkthrough, I'll be able to get a proper ending with a specific girl… if I follow directions right.

And using my 5% Japanese words, vocabulary and sentence understanding, I may be able to understand the story.

This is ridiculous. You won't understand the story without the text. Besides, the player is YOU. You are supposed to be talking, but the talk is only through the text. The girls and other people may be talking to you through voice-overs, but that means you are getting half the conversation only.
Yes I will get half the story that way.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
This will be a single run-through on the game To Heart 2. Since there are multiple paths to this game, giving the player multiple stories to experience, I have just decided on just one story path… Konomi Yuzuhara. I will play through Konomi's story scenario and make an attempt to win Konomi's heart and finish the game with a good ending.

Because of my lack of Japanese knowledge, it is not an assurance that I can finish the game with a complete Konomi scenario. Even though I have acquired a walkthrough telling me where to go and what choices to make throughout the game, it's obviously in Japanese, and I may have some mistakes in following those directions.

I will update this page to tell my progress through the game. To Heart 2 gameplay and timeline is divided into days, starting from March 1 and ending about two months later. I will tell the story as those days go by. I will also make a reaction and reflection post after some days have transpired in To Heart 2, so if you are getting bored of the blow-by-blow commentary of the daily, try those too.

The posts for each day is written with a viewpoint assuming that I am Takaki, while the posts for each review assumes that I am a third person talking about To Heart 2 summaries and reactions. Please take note of that when reading through this project.

Wonder why my To Heart 2 posts are dated March or April 2004? It's because the To Heart 2 calendar is based to the real 2004 calendar, where March 1 is a Monday. So it doesn't mean that I did it 1 year ago, I just gave each post their respective date timestamp so as to reduce clutter in my regular anime blogging.

Of course, lacking Japanese will mean lack of story details.

Because this is a Konomi-only scenario, chances are I won't meet some other To Heart 2 characters along the way.

I'm not promising that I will finish the game immediately. This is a LONG game, and I'VE NEVER PLAYED THIS KIND OF GAME BEFORE AT ALL! Surprised? Yup, I know about almost all the anime counterparts of bishoujo games, but I never play those bishoujo games itself. The most I could ever do is look at the CGs of the game.

If in case there will be a To Heart 2 anime, I will make sure to finish the game before that is shown on Japan. It is announced to air this fall, by the way. Rejoice! Also, there will be a PC version of this game, so I may look back and open this project again if deems necessary, just in case Konomi has some new story threads and scenarios added in the PC version.

I just found out that there are "rumors" of a translation patch for To Heart 2! Link and more pictures (pic1 pic2 pic3)

If this turns out to be true, I may decide to replay the game and fix up all my mistakes in the Konomi scenario.

This project is finally complete.

Actually, if you bust out the kanji dictionary and don't mind taking half an hour to play what usually would be 5-10 clicks, I've found playing a bishoujo game to be a decent way to learning japanese. The key for me is having a reason to learn; even if this isn't the best way, it's still a good way since otherwise I have no motivation to learn more japanese now that I'm out of college. Good luck with your endeavor!

    Thanks for the support!

Trying to learn the kanji and kana from this game will be next to impossible for me. It would be a bit convenient if I can just merely copy the text and paste it in some dictionary program and learn from there, but it doesn't work that way.

If anything, playing this will increase my Japanese speech vocabulary and stuff. Only through the voices can I understand what the heck they are talking about.

Good Luck- it looks so kawaii! but I'm stuck just looking at the CG's etc.
It's so unfortunate that these games can't cross over to America-I think there would be a market for them-oh well.
P.S. great site with a unique style bluemist-the fact you like ToHeart2 just confirms you excellent perception and taste!

good luck with this. Kind of funny since I *want* to play this game (partly thanks to reading your blog) but don't have it in any form…. instead I'm going through Fate/Stay Night even though I don't know any Japanese.

My hopes of it being voiced went down the crapper so I'm basically guessing when I *do* need to choose (and saving a lot). Thankfully there are some sites that give some synopsis of what I'm suppose to do and what the story is about… haha… man…

… anyway, again, good luck man!

    Thanks!

    @jj shaka
In America they already have Comic Party anime, and To Heart will be coming as well. If more anime of this kind get licensed, there may be a chance for the games to be ported as well. A small, small chance though…

    @moyism
Fate/Stay Night is quite popular to the extent that it already has English fansites and synopses. As for me, I have not found any english material for To Heart 2 yet, aside from maybe the accounts of various game players in forums.

I can see how this is addictive- and I'm just reading it!
Good Luck and thanks for doing this.
Can't wait for Tamaki to show up.

believe it or not, I look forward to your post on To Heart 2 since I'm sorta of a junkie of the dating-sim games. Now only if I had a modded PS2 and/or the game itself…

… btw, esp loved all remarks about chilling with Yuji… LMAO.

  8. Omgwtflolz June 8th, 2005

In regards to that PM, you have to complete the game a couple of times before that choice (あきらねて寝よう) becomes available. Choosing the other (I've forgotten what it was) sticks you on Yuuki's route.

    >Can you provide me some info regarding this, and how to finish all the other girl's scenarios?

I've mentioned Yuuki. You can get onto the Himeyuri sisters' route (you're forced onto it, rather) after you fail to get Ruuko/Lucy's ending on her route.

Aside from those, the rest are pretty much straightforward.

  9. Omgwtflolz June 8th, 2005
    2:51 CDT

Oh, and by the way, if you don't play through Ruuko/Lucy, Manaka, Tamaki, and Yuuki's routes, you're really missing a lot.

  10. bluemist June 8th, 2005
    7:46 CDT

@Omgwtflolz - Thanks for the tip! I think I can figure the game progression now. Anyway you're right, I'm missing a lot going through only the Konomi route. I'm thinking of playing through the other characters privately after I finish this project.

How do you do? I am Japanese To Heart2 fan. I found your blog the other day, and I am surprised at your great effort! I am interested in foreginer's impression of To Heart2. So your blog amuses me very much!

The Japanese in Leaf's games tends to be unusually hard compared to other dating sims. I haven't actually played TH2 yet (I'm a big fan of the original To Heart and I've got the sinking feeling that the sequel sucks in comparison, since it's not by the same team at all), but of all the Japanese videogames I've ever played Leaf's Routes has the hardest Japanese and To Heart 1 has the second-hardest. The Japanese in Leaf games is harder than in many dead-tree novels. If you're a beginner you'd probably have a much easier time (and learn more) with something like Kanon, Tokimeki Memorial or True Love Story.

Hey, I just happened to stumble on this site, and well, nice to see someone who played To heart 2 from America as well.

Anyways, I know most of the things about this game because most of the scenarios has been translated to Korean. I myself was halfway through translating Himeyuri story before I had to give up for my college study.

Overall, this is a worthy successor to "To Heart" and I really enjoyed the story very much. Now I'm just waiting for the PC version and the rest of the Anime episodes……

  15. bluemist October 10th, 2005
    10:52 CDT

@solgae: Actually I'm not from America, but being able to write in English it's a common misconception to me.

Thanks a lot for providing some much needed corrections by the way! You shed some of my Manaka woes away particularly. Thanks again!

No problem. If you need clarification on the story, just ask away. I made comments on almost every character's section, so you can take a look at them too.

I stumbled upon your site a animesuki, and I must say I'm surprised and yet proud that you're a kababayan. I really hope that whoever was making the english translation for the game finish their project. imho, d-sims are like reading visual, novels - 50% from the images and 50% from the text, and as my prof in literature once said, novels are to be 100% absorbed and enjoyed in order to be appreciated. Keep it up!

I was searching for anything I could find for the game, "To Heart" and "To Heart 2" …finding nothing but websites having nothing to do with the game. But then I came here, and I'm glad! See, I wanted so badly to play a Japanese bishoujo game… knowing only about five Japanese phrases.. so after months of searching I bought "To Heart 2!" And as I type, I'm about to begin the impossible, and play it.. I hope I have as much luck as you! ^-^
